We're heading in to a very busy stretch in my firm. The fall and spring trial schedule is packed. Between now and the end of March, we have eleven cases set with firm jury trial dates, a couple murders, manslaughter, child sexual assault, legal malpractice, violations of First and Fourth Amendment rights. Hard cases; good fights; flat-out busy. I relish the months to come even as I quake, like Pilgrim, on the first steps of this journey.
Monday night one of my associates announced he is leaving. He's been with me for three years, and has endured a long commute each day to be in the office. I've urged him to move closer, but his family is set on the Eastern side of the state. They don't want to move. So he is. Rather than driving more than an hour each way to and from work, he will now commute ten minutes each way. I can't say I blame him.
I need to replace him immediately. His focus was federal civil rights. We bring claims against state actors for public employees, typically state troopers and police officers. We also sue cops and towns often. I need someone who is good with a pen, has a mind for details and is patient: fact patterns in these cases can be bewilderingly complex. The ideal person will have three to five years experience at the bar and will be admitted in Connecticut in both state and federal courts. I would also like a strong writer. You'be responding to summary judgment motions and briefing issues for both the state Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Lawyers associated with my firm have twice been to the United States Supreme Court, so the sky's the limit.
We're a small boutique firm focused almost entirely on criminal defense and civil rights, although we get involved in high-conflict divorces from time to time, and occasionally have been known to defend folks in civil actions that are uncovered by insurance. There are four lawyers in the firm, and a small support staff: when we get swamped, we contract out for writing help. Our offices are in a small town well away from everything but my home.
